Chewing tobacco is dangerous for dental health

Chewing-tobacco-is-dangerous-for-dental-health

If you smoke, then you’ve probably been told by your doctor that you should quit for the health of your heart and lungs, and by the dentist that you should give up this dangerous habit for the sake of your teeth. According to HealthyTeeth.org, cigarettes may cause stained teeth and shrinking gums, which is why it’s important to quit. While some people may swap cigarettes for chewing tobacco when they are trying to quit, this form of tobacco may actually be worse for the teeth.

According to the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, chewing tobacco can cause oral cancer, and the sugar in smokeless tobacco may cause decay in exposed tooth roots. Furthermore, chewing tobacco may cause the gums to pull away from the teeth where the tobacco is being held. When this occurs, the gums will not go back into place.

For all of these reasons, it’s important for people who smoke or use chewing tobacco to talk to their doctor or dentist about ways to quit before these two equally dangerous habits may permanently affect dental health.
